DIY Stems, isolating parts of songs without the stems?

Does anyone have tips to isolating stuff without having the stems?

Like EQ and other things to isolate things out of songs?

Like riff station you can kind of go left and right with the audio to try isolate stuff but then when muting it out the audio quality goes bad.

What stuff do you guys use?

Any time you use EQ to try isolating things it'll affect the other instruments because there's always some overlap in overtones. That's why trying to use a noise reduction or vocal isolation plug-in makes everything else sound worse.

If you can get the full track and a track that is missing one part (like a track without vocals or without guitar, etc.), you can try using phase cancellation. Line the tracks up as close to perfectly as you can, invert the phase on one, and combine them. That should isolate whatever was missing from the second track (the vocals or guitar etc.).

MashTactic is a great VST plugin for isolating based on frequency and stereo field position. I have used it many times in the past to extract some very decent stems from songs.

Here is a good example of what I've done using only MashTactic and some minor editing: http://literecords.com/showthread.ph...ood-DIY-Stems)

    This one's even better: http://literecords.com/showthread.ph...565#post190565
